Get your category right and the readers who want exactly your kind of story find you. Get it wrong and your book is invisible — sitting on a shelf your readers never browse. Shelfsmith checks your book against thousands of real titles and tells you where it lands — so you can fix it while you still can.
When you publish on Amazon you choose up to three categories. But Amazon doesn’t simply take your word for it — its system reads your title, subtitle, blurb and keywords and decides whether your book really belongs there.
If those signals say “generic contemporary romance” but you chose “Clean & Wholesome,” Amazon can quietly file you in the broad category instead — the one with a hundred thousand books and none of your specific readers. And once the book is live, that placement is painful to undo.
BISAC (Book Industry Standards and Communications) is the publishing industry’s official list of subject codes — a standard way of saying precisely what a book is. Every romance sub-type has one:
FIC027270 = Romance / Clean & Wholesome
FIC027560 = Romance / Dark Romance
FIC027070 = Romance / Historical / Regency
Think of a BISAC code as your book’s shelf label — written in a language every bookstore, library and retailer understands.
Here’s the part that trips authors up: on Amazon you no longer pick a BISAC code yourself. Since 2023 you choose an Amazon category, and Amazon works out the matching BISAC automatically, behind the scenes. So the category you pick is your BISAC — you just never see the code. It still matters directly if you go “wide” (selling through IngramSpark, libraries and other retailers), where the BISAC is exactly how your book gets shelved.
Why this matters to you: the category you pick — and the BISAC it maps to — is the single biggest lever controlling where your book appears. Your keywords, subtitle and blurb then either back it up (so Amazon keeps you there and readers find you) or fight it (so you drift). Shelfsmith checks all of it together, against thousands of real books whose shelves we already know.
Haven’t hit publish yet? Paste the blurb you’re about to upload and the category you’re aiming for. We tell you — before Amazon decides — whether it will land where you want, and what it actually reads as.
Already live and not sure why you’re where you are? Drop in your book’s Amazon link. We pull it up, show you the exact shelves Amazon has it on right now, and explain why it landed there.
